“EV charging only at risk if not integrated with an energy system”
Many important efforts are underway to promote electric driving. Ahead of the Charging Infrastructure Belgium ’25 Congress on February 11th, Juha Stenberg, CEO and co-founder of eMabler, addresses the success of his company, and solutions to the challenges they encounter in this fast growing market.
“One of the biggest problems with current EV charging services is fragmentation. Too many mobile apps and isolated, vertical solutions lead to a poor user experience for drivers. Additionally, the reliability of public charging networks is still too low. At eMabler, we believe the future of EV charging lies in open, integrated solutions that provide a seamless and dependable charging experience. By eliminating silos and ensuring interoperability, we enable businesses to offer better services while making EV charging as easy and reliable as refueling a traditional vehicle”, says Juha Stenberg, who’s company is transforming the eMobility industry with an innovative and customer-centric solution.
“At the upcoming event in Brussels, we are showcasing our success in the Nordic region, the world’s most advanced EV market. We work with energy companies, petrol retailers, retail chains, and parking operators, enabling them to seamlessly integrate EV charging services into their core business. These companies have already made significant investments in systems and processes, and we provide the critical missing link that allows them to add EV charging as a natural extension of their existing services.” According to Juha, eMabler’s platform is all about enhancing customer experience, simplifying operations, and unlocking new revenue streams. “By integrating EV charging services via APIs and connectors, our customers can offer a seamless experience – for example, enabling users to access all services through a single app and receive a single invoice for multiple services. This level of integration not only improves the user experience but also creates cross-selling opportunities, allowing businesses to maximise the value of their existing customer base.”
Mission
“Our mission is to make EV charging simple for the end-user and seamlessly integrate it with energy systems. EV charging plays a crucial role in the energy transition. Most EVs are charged at home or at the workplace, making charging an ideal load to be managed intelligently. As energy systems become increasingly volatile, demand-side flexibility will be essential. The first step is for EV charging to respond to price fluctuations, followed by grid balancing, and eventually, EVs will act as dynamic loads in virtual power plants.” In the Nordic countries Danmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and their overseas territories Åland, Faeröer and Greenland, this is already a reality. Juha: “And we are actively enabling these innovations.”
Electricity shortages and other challenges
“EV charging is at risk only if it is not integrated with the energy system”, says Juha. “Smart charging solutions, which adjust consumption based on grid conditions and electricity prices, will be key to ensuring that EV adoption continues without straining the grid. Our platform facilitates this integration, making EV charging a flexible and manageable part of the energy system rather than a burden. The EV charging industry is still evolving, and technology will continue to advance. One major development will be the mass adoption of Plug&Charge technology, which enhances user convenience by enabling automatic authentication and improved visibility into a vehicle’s state of charge. The next steps will include bidirectional charging and deeper integration with energy markets, allowing EVs to support grid stability and even supply power back to the grid when needed.”
Ideal charging infrastructure
Juha explains: “The ideal charging infrastructure ensures that vehicles charge where they naturally spend the most time – at home, at work, in parking garages, and at shopping centres – while being complemented by fast public charging for long-distance travel.” He repeats that seamless system integration is essential to ensure optimal charging. “Today, reimbursement for charging costs is still overly complex, and this must be streamlined for drivers, businesses, and fleets. The future of EV charging will be deeply integrated with surrounding systems, including payment solutions, fleet management platforms, energy management systems, and business operations software, making the entire process effortless for all stakeholders.”
